Beauty and the Beast Film Banned from Malaysia Due to Gay Character

Beauty and the Beast Disney Live Action

The release of the live action adaptation of Beauty and the Beast, which opens in theaters this month, has been temporarily halted in Malaysia pending an internal review of a scene with a homosexual character.

LeFou, a flamboyant and blatantly gay character is the first gay character in a major Walt Disney film.

The film, which stars Emma Watson as Belle and Dan Stevens as Beast, quickly caused global controversy after its director Bill Condon announced in an interview with Attitude magazine that the film would contain gay content.

In addition to Malaysia, the film has been criticised in other countries including Singapore and Russia.
