In the new Lionsgate re-make of the Power Rangers, one of the rangers is a lesbian. This seals the film’s place in history as the first big budget superhero movie ever to have an openly gay protagonist.
In the film, the Trini (also known as the Yellow Ranger), played by Becky G, explores her sexuality and has “girlfriend” issues. This is a change from the original 1990’s version of the character, who was portrayed as straight at that time.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Director of the film Dean Israelite said the following about Trini:
“For Trini, really she’s questioning a lot about who she is. She hasn’t fully figured it out yet. I think what’s great about that scene and what that scene propels for the rest of the movie is, ‘That’s OK.’ The movie is saying, ‘That’s OK,’ and all of the kids have to own who they are and find their tribe.”
LGBT superheroes have trailed in Hollywood compared to their comic book counterparts. Wonder Woman, Catwoman, Batwoman, Harley Quinn, and Ice Man are all characters which in comics were members of the LGBT community but in all cases these characters were portrayed as straight on the big screen.
